Myanmar, also known as Burma, is a country of rich culture, deep spirituality, and resilient people. Nestled between India, China, and Thailand, Myanmar is home to over 54 million people, representing a diverse mix of ethnic groups, religions, and traditions. However, behind its beauty lies a nation in turmoil—struggling with poverty, war, and a deep spiritual need for Christ.
Amidst political instability and social hardships, orphans, widows, refugees, and entire communities are suffering, and the need for education, relief, and the Gospel is greater than ever.
Myanmar has been facing a brutal civil war for over four years, with conflicts between the military and ethnic resistance groups devastating cities and villages. Thousands of civilians have been killed, and millions have been displaced. The violence has caused:
The economic crisis has made life even more difficult, with high inflation, job losses, and a failing healthcare system. Many families cannot afford food, medical care, or education for their children, making poverty a daily reality.
Myanmar is a Buddhist-majority nation, with over 88% of the population practicing Buddhism. Christianity remains a small minority, and believers often face discrimination and persecution, particularly in rural areas where religious traditions are deeply entrenched.
Despite these challenges, God is at work in Myanmar. Churches, missionaries, and Christian organizations continue to share the Gospel of hope, provide education and relief, and support those suffering from war and poverty. Many people, especially the younger generation, are open to the message of Christ, and the need for mission work has never been greater.
With the ongoing war, poverty, and humanitarian crisis, Myanmar is in desperate need of spiritual and physical support. Key areas that require urgent help include:
At World Mission & Hope, we are committed to bringing hope and transformation to Myanmar by supporting orphans, widows, refugees, churches, and Christian schools.
Will you stand with us in this mission? Your prayers, donations, and support can help transform lives, bring relief to the suffering, and spread the light of the Gospel to those in darkness.
"The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it." – John 1:5
For the past ten years, we have been dedicated to mission work in Myanmar, focusing on training missionaries, education, and humanitarian aid. From the beginning, we have been conducting missionary training programs. These programs emphasize Bible study, organic farming, and natural healing as core subjects.
Missionary Training and Organic Farming
The second cohort of missionary training is currently underway, equipping young missionaries with practical skills for service. Additionally, we have launched an organic farming initiative, which not only supports sustainable agriculture but also provides healthy food sources for communities in need.
Education Mission: Turning a Health Center into a School
As Myanmar’s government shut down schools for over a year due to COVID-19, we saw a pressing need for children’s education in the local community. Seeking a new mission strategy, we converted the health center into a school and repurposed trained missionaries as teachers.
Currently, around 150 children are studying both Bible-based education and standard academic subjects. By God’s grace, we have been able to expand the school with six additional classrooms, yet four more classrooms are still needed to accommodate the growing number of students.
Providing Education for Refugee Children
60% of our students come from a refugee camp located 20 minutes away from the school. These refugees fled their homes on foot when the military persecuted and committed genocide against the Rohingya people. They walked for seven days and took any transport they could find to escape the violence, forming a new settlement in extreme poverty.
Most families rely on men traveling to cities or even foreign countries (such as Thailand) for work, sending money home to sustain their families. In response to this hardship, we began providing free lunches for students, but soon realized that many came to school without eating breakfast. As a result, our teachers voluntarily started preparing breakfast, and we now provide two meals a day for all students.
Additionally, because young children struggled to commute from the refugee camp to our school, we established a new primary school inside the refugee camp last year. A dedicated trained missionary now serves as the teacher, and free meals are provided daily. Parents in the refugee camp have expressed deep gratitude for both the education and meal support, recognizing our school as a vital source of hope in their community.
Escalating Civil War and Expanding Mission Work
Myanmar’s civil war has intensified for the fourth consecutive year, making the situation increasingly dangerous. Many teachers have been killed, schools have been destroyed, and the education system is on the verge of collapse. The military's forced conscription policy has driven over 60,000 young men to flee the country within the past year, with many more still seeking refuge abroad.
Three of our male teachers escaped Myanmar last year—two of them are now undergoing Thousand Missionary Movement training in the Philippines and are actively engaged in mission work. However, we do not know if they will ever be able to return.
Ironically, the ongoing civil war has opened even greater opportunities for education-based mission work. As the need for education increases, we plan to open small schools in two or three additional locations, as long as we have the manpower and financial support.
Despite the challenges of war, poverty, and persecution, God is opening doors for His mission in Myanmar. We trust in His divine guidance and invite you to join us in prayer and support for this vital ministry.
Your generous donation will provide clothing, meals, and education to Myanmar people who have lost their families, offering them hope and a brighter future.
